FORT SMITH, Arkansas (October 18, 2022) – In recognition of the 7th annual national Energy Efficiency Day, on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, Arkansas Oklahoma Gas (AOG) joined City of Fort Smith Mayor George McGill in promoting energy efficiency – the most economical, quickest way to meet energy needs, cut utility bills, and reduce pollution.

Energy efficiency is also an economic engine, amassing a U.S. workforce of nearly 2.4 million. Ranging from professional services to manufacturing, installation, and construction, these good jobs are local and cannot be outsourced.

“The environmental and economic advantages of implementing energy efficiency measures are key for the Arkansas River Valley,” said Clark Medlock, Director of Energy Efficiency Programs at AOG. “Mayor McGill’s official proclamation of October 5, 2022 as Energy Efficiency Day in the City of Fort Smith further demonstrates that companies and municipalities build resilience across multiple scales. We can all do our part to make our communities stronger and better prepared for the future.”

Each year, AOG, which is a subsidiary of Summit Utilities, Inc. (Summit), invests more than $1.5 million in energy efficiency programs that directly benefit its customers. By reducing the energy usage of its customers, AOG helps keep more money in its customer’s pockets, while at the same time, its customer’s carbon footprint.

Over the last decade, Summit’s energy efficiency programs in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Missouri resulted in a carbon avoidance of approximately 29,905 metric tons of carbon dioxide. That is equivalent to taking over 6,444 cars off the road or offsetting the total energy usage of over 3,767 homes. Summit’s energy efficiency programs help make homes more efficient by creating a thermal barrier to reduce energy usage and costs while also increasing air circulation and creating healthier ventilation and superior air quality by preventing pollutants from coming into the home. In 2020, AOG started a low-income energy efficiency program in Arkansas that helps families reduce their utility costs and reap the benefits of home weatherization.

On Wednesday, October 5, 2022, a growing network showcased the vital benefits of energy efficiency during the 7th annual nationwide Energy Efficiency Day.

AOG provides natural gas service to approximately 60,000 residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural customers in Arkansas and Oklahoma. We have been served the residential and commercial customers in Fort Smith and the surrounding area with safe and reliable natural gas service for nearly 75 years.

AOG is based in Fort Smith in the heart of the Arkoma Basin, an area rich in natural gas production, which gives AOG the ability to access and transport natural gas produced from local wells. These local supplies, in combination with our ability to obtain natural gas from interstate pipelines, enable us to provide reliable natural gas service to all of our customers.

In 2017, AOG joined a larger group of natural gas utilities when it combined with Summit Utilities, Inc. This merger added expertise to AOG’s team, as well as additional financial resources, for ongoing growth and investments to protect the integrity and safety of AOG’s natural gas system.
